Shrove Tuesday: Pancake Day Traditions and Gut-Friendly Treats

Did you know that beyond the stack of pancakes, there are a whole host of traditions linked to Pancake Day or Shrove Tuesday, which is celebrated this year on Tuesday 4 March 2025?

Traditions

From the traditional Pancake Day race – such as the internationally famous Olney race (open only to female residents). Local folklore says that the tradition started in the 15th Century when a harassed housewife, rushing to attend church on Shrove Tuesday, ran to the service with a frying pan and pancake still in her hand!

To the Medieval Mob Football (called Caid in Ireland – a forerunner to the modern day Gaelic football) – where two opposing village teams (potentially involving hundreds of players) would attempt – from a central point – to get the ball back to their village to win! The rules appear vague and injuries would be rife! The annual ‘Scoring the Hales’ match still takes place in Alnwick in Northumberland.

And in Ireland, Máirt de hInide (Shrove Tuesday) was a popular day for weddings as marriage was not permitted during Lent – the 40 day period of fasting before Easter.  Plus, being good at tossing a pancake was seen as a desirable skill when looking for a marriage partner!

Having a gut-friendly celebration

The common link between all these traditions are families and friends coming together to make, flip and enjoy pancakes!

But don’t despair if you are someone who has gut health problems such as bloating, indigestion or other digestive issues. Love Your Gut is here to help.

Why gut health matters

Remember, your gut is home to trillions of bacteria that play a crucial role in digestion, immune function and could even influence your mental health. A balanced gut microbiome helps with nutrient absorption, reduces inflammation and keeps your digestive system running smoothly. So, with a few smart choices, you can enjoy pancakes without the discomfort.

Inspiration from Love Your Gut

This year, why not try one of our delicious gut-friendly pancake recipes?

Blueberry, banana and cardamom pancakes

These fluffy, grain-free pancakes are high in fibre and antioxidants from blueberries, to help maintain healthy digestion. They’re incredibly easy and quick to make.

Spinach and buckwheat pancakes with smoked salmon

Not a fan of sweet pancakes or want to mix it up? Try this savoury dish. Despite its name, buckwheat is not a member of the wheat family and it is gluten free. It’s a good source of dietary fibre, complex carbohydrates and a range of polyphenols – all of which can have a beneficial effect on the gut microbiota. Spinach is a rich source of magnesium, beta-carotene, folate, vitamin C and vitamin K. It also adds a range of essential micronutrients to the dish.

Other tips to help you enjoy your Pancake Day feast:

  • Top your pancake with stewed apple or mashed banana – for added sweetness and fibre.
  • Add spices such as cinnamon, ginger or turmeric to soothe digestion.
  • Savour each bite and eat slowly to give your body time to break down food to aid digestion.
  • Sprinkle nuts and seeds for healthy fats, fibre and a little bit of crunch.
  • Have a herbal tea with your pancake. Peppermint, in particular, soothes bloating and ginger tea can help with gut motility.

Whatever you do to celebrate – enjoy!
