Whether you are enjoying the Olympics at home, at work, or at the Olympic Park itself, below are a few tips that may come in handy…

With the Olympics in full swing, consumption of alcohol may be high; try to watch how much you drink, as large amounts of alcohol may affect our bowel movements because alcohol prevents our small and large intestines from reabsorbing salt and water, which in turn may cause diarrhoea.

Stressful journeys to and from work – Try to keep calm; one of the first parts of the body to react to stress is our digestive system, causing gastrointestinal problems such as bloating, constipation and diarrhoea. Not only stress itself can affect the digestive system, being stress also means we may be more likely to indulge in lifestyle habits that are not ideal for our digestive system, such as excessive smoking and drinking, less exercise, poor eating habits resulting in an unbalanced diet, in turn causing an unbalance of good and bad bacteria in our gut.

With the weather being so hot and humid – Try to stay hydrated; drink plenty of fluids, especially water. It encourages the passage of waste through your digestive system and helps soften stools. Fibre acts like a sponge, absorbing water, and without fluid the fibre can’t do its job, causing constipation.

Having said all of the above….enjoy the Olympics!
